Historical Background

The monument is dedicated to the mothers who sacrificed their lives to save their children. The sculpture was put up in the late 1980s by a man who had himself lived through the Siege in Leningrad. Its author, B. A. Semyonov, was only two years old when the Siege began. The sculptor's father went to the front and was killed, while his mother kept herself and her son alive in the cut-off city. In 1943 they were evacuated to the Astrakhan region. The sculptor's mother died in 1987, and after her death Semyonov returned to Leningrad to immortalize the memory of the heroic mothers.
