Legend and Significance

St. Olga's Cross marks a spot on the left bank of the Velikaya River associated with the legend of Princess Olga. It was here, tradition says, that she saw three rays of sunlight converge at a single point on the opposite bank. There the princess ordered the Holy Trinity Cathedral to be built, the first Christian church in Pskov. Locals regard Olga as their heavenly patron.

Memorial and Architecture

On a cobblestone pedestal stands a metal cross that copies the shape of the ancient wooden cross that once stood here. Next to it is St. Olga's Chapel, a modern building from 2000 in the style of Old Russian architecture, with a Greek-cross plan. The square in front of the chapel offers a view of the Pskov Kremlin. St. Olga's Cross stands across from the Trinity Cathedral, on the bank where a riverside walk begins along the Velikaya, continuing along the Olginskaya and Krasnoarmeiskaya embankments. Nearby is the installation “Russia Begins Here,” assembled from letters left over after the demolition of the Rossiya Hotel in Moscow. Most visitors wonder why Russia begins precisely here, but nobody knows the exact answer.
