History and Location

The Mirozh Arboretum was created in 1966 at the initiative of Pskov residents by the walls of the Transfiguration of the Savior Monastery, where the Mirozha River flows into the Velikaya. This is where the small Mirozha River, which gave the monastery its name, once flowed. For a long time the park stood neglected, partly overgrown and waterlogged, until a large-scale reconstruction in 2013 as part of an international project between Russia, Latvia, and Estonia.

Its Look Today

Today the arboretum covers 6.4 hectares (16 acres) and is a well-kept area with footpaths, lawns, and avenues of maples and birches. There are many trees rare for the region: sycamore maple, Ledebour's willow, Tatar maple, rugosa rose, and mountain pine. An artificial pond with a little island, a permanent home for wild ducks, adds to the coziness. In memory of the international cooperation, 10 mountain pines were planted in the arboretum. Locals and tourists stroll in the park, and in summer a boat station rents out pedal boats.
