History of the Place

The riverbanks were gradually landscaped from the mid-19th century. That was when embankments and piers first appeared, while the fortress walls and towers, including the Mstislavskaya and Pokrovskaya towers, partly reach down to the river. Around them, wooden houses and buildings from the late 19th century have survived, creating an atmosphere of living history.

Life Today

Today the embankment stretches for about 1.7 kilometers (1 mile) along the right bank of the Velikaya River, from the 50th Anniversary of October Bridge to the Olginsky Bridge. It has two levels: an open footpath runs along the water, and above it is a shady linden avenue with benches and lampposts. Stairs and ramps connect the two levels, creating a comfortable space for walks and sports. There are piers for pleasure boats here, and in the warm season cafés are open.
