Historical Background

The Church of the Annunciation stands at the corner of Komsomolskaya and Dzerzhinskogo Streets, not far from Sovetskaya Square. The first wooden church was built here in 1614 over the mass grave of warriors from Arzamas and Ryazan who fell in the battle for Zaraysk in 1608. Construction of the stone building that survives today began in 1777 and was completed in the early 19th century.

Architecture

The church is built in the provincial Baroque style: a cube-shaped main volume lit by three tiers of windows, with bright blue domes and white walls. The three-tier stone bell tower in the Classical style was added in 1825, and the refectory was rebuilt in 1863. Inside is a multi-tiered iconostasis in the early Classical style, and its 18th-century icons are considered local masterpieces.

Significance and Preservation

The Church of the Annunciation is one of the few churches in Zaraysk that never closed, even in Soviet times: services continued to be held here. Icons from closed and demolished churches of the district were brought here. Its most revered treasure is the icon of St. Nicholas of Zaraysk in an antique metal cover.
