Historical Background

Zaraysk's water tower was built in 1914–1916 to a design by the technician A. I. Filippov. It stands on one of the highest points in town, at the intersection of Krasnoarmeyskaya and Gulyaeva Streets. The tower served an important civic purpose, supplying water to four nearby streets. Around it is a small park with a playground and places to relax.

Architecture and Purpose

The tower is an octagonal brick structure about 29 meters (95 ft) tall, styled after a medieval fortification with decorative machicolations and crenellated loopholes. Inside are four levels, and the original water tank survives on the second-to-last one. The tower's look is typical of Russian architecture of the early 20th century and fits well with Zaraysk's historic center.

Today

After standing idle for a long time and partly falling into ruin, the tower was restored in 2016. The stairs, floors and facades were rebuilt with their historic appearance intact. Today the top level has an observation deck with panoramic views of the town and the surrounding countryside. On the way up there are benches and exhibition spaces. Nearby you'll find a ping-pong area and slides for kids. Tickets are sold at the Leonov House of Culture.

Why It Matters to the Town and Its Visitors

The water tower has become one of Zaraysk's top tourist sights. From its observation deck you can see church domes, old streets and the green countryside. The tower is part of walking routes and hosts tours and cultural events. In the evening it is lit up, making it a landmark you can spot even after dark.
