House of the Revolutionary Poet Machtet

🏟️ Architectural landmark • 🕵️ Urban legend

Historical Background

The house of the poet and revolutionary Grigory Alexandrovich Machtet is a two-story merchant mansion from the first half of the 19th century, built in the Classical style. Machtet lived and worked here from 1891 to 1895. His family was of English origin, and the house was bought by the poet's relatives in the late 1880s. Machtet's house is a regionally protected landmark and part of Zaraysk's history, combining architectural heritage with contemporary art. It stands in the center of town, close to other sights, including the Anna Golubkina Museum.

Architecture and Interior

The ground floor is brick, while the upper floor is made of logs, clad in boards and decorated with applied wooden ornament. The facade features a portico of pilasters topped with a pediment, and the layout includes formal and living rooms connected by a corridor. The house has a large attic, an underground room and a landscaped yard.

Today

Today the house is home to the local Employment Center. There are plans to turn the building into an art hotel called “Four Wildflowers,” inspired by Anna Golubkina's botanical illustrations, creating a cultural cluster called “The Zaraysk Garden.”
