“A piece of Heaven on Far Eastern soil”: that is what the sisters call their convent, which stands in a picturesque spot on the shore of Lake Petropavlovskoye. The bell tower offers a breathtaking view of the lake's blue waters, emerald forests, and endless open plains. The idea of founding a monastery in the Amur region goes back to St. Innocent (Veniaminov). It began to take shape under Bishop Makary (Darsky), who invited Hieromonk Alexy (Oskolkov) from Mount Athos. In 1894 Hieromonk Alexy began searching for a site for the monastery, but the chosen place flooded and a new one had to be found. The modern convent was founded in 2001 under Bishop Mark (Tuzhikov). Today it is a flourishing community with churches, workshops, and farm buildings.

Vladimir the Baptizer: A Mosaic Shrine of Sisterly Love

A special place in the convent belongs to the mosaic icon of Prince Vladimir, which adorns a separate chapel on the grounds. Notably, the icon was made by the sisters of the convent themselves, which gives it particular spiritual value. The icon is executed in mosaic, a technique characteristic of the convent's decoration. The sisters showed great skill in creating this work of church art, putting into it not only professional craftsmanship but spiritual strength. The image of Prince Vladimir has special meaning for the Orthodox world as the baptizer of Rus. In icons he is shown in a princely crown and rich robes symbolizing his high rank. The icon of Prince Vladimir is part of the spiritual heritage of the convent, which keeps other important holy objects as well, including the mosaic icon of the Mother of God “The Inexhaustible Chalice.” All these works were made by the nuns' own hands, which makes them especially dear to believers.
