The Hekhtsir foothills lie at the foot of the Hekhtsir range in Khabarovsk District, roughly 12–30 kilometers (7.5–19 miles) south of Khabarovsk. The range rises above the Amur-Ussuri Lowland, a land beautiful for its variety of forests, rivers, and fields. On this motor route, visitors and Far East residents alike can enjoy a unique encounter with the untouched nature of the Russian Far East.

Birch groves often spring up where forests have been cut down or burned. They prepare the soil for more shade-tolerant species such as Korean pine, spruce, and fir. This grove has Asian white birches (up to 27 meters (89 feet) tall) and Dahurian birches (up to 25 meters (82 feet)), both typical of Khabarovsk Territory. These trees can live 120–200 years!
Old-timers in the village of Krasnorechenskoye say that in the middle of the trail you can sometimes hear a quiet whisper, as if the trees were talking among themselves. No one knows for sure whose voices these are or in what language the whisper drifts through the grove. But it is said that whoever hears it will feel instant relief, as though the forest had entered into a silent dialogue with the traveler and listened to all their troubles.
