The Hekhtsir foothills lie at the foot of the Hekhtsir range in Khabarovsk District, roughly 12–30 kilometers (7.5–19 miles) south of Khabarovsk. The range rises above the Amur-Ussuri Lowland, a land beautiful for its variety of forests, rivers, and fields. On this motor route, visitors and Far East residents alike can enjoy a unique encounter with the untouched nature of the Russian Far East.

Scots pine grows here, a tree typical of some parts of Khabarovsk Territory. It can reach 30–35 meters (100–115 feet) in height, and sometimes more than 40 meters (130 feet), with a trunk up to 80–100 centimeters (31–39 inches) across. Some pines in this forest may be quite venerable, as much as 300–350 years old. The oldest trees are true keepers of the history of these places.
There are many versions of where the name “Hekhtsir” comes from, but the most “beautiful” one tells of a Nanai man named Kheekchir who suddenly began to understand the language of nature, became a shaman, and healed many people. The forests of Hekhtsir are home not only to ordinary squirrels, chipmunks, hares, roe deer, and moose, but also to the remarkable mandarin duck, the sable, the Amur leopard cat, and even the Himalayan (Asiatic black) bear and the brown bear.
