Klin is known as Tchaikovsky's town: the composer spent the last years of his life here. The atmosphere of a provincial district town, with wooden houses and quiet streets, has survived to this day. The town is surrounded by forests and lies on the road from Moscow to Tver. Visitors come for a relaxed stroll through the historic center and a look at the local heritage.

Historical Background

This anniversary monument in the shape of a giant shield stands in the Trading Rows square. It was created as a symbol of the link between Klin's past and present. The back of the shield gives an overview of the key events in the town's history, starting in 1317, when Klin was first mentioned in written sources.

Design and Concept

The monument is cast in bronze and set on a granite pedestal. It was designed by Alexander Rozhnikov, Honored Artist of Russia, who also created the Tchaikovsky monument by the composer's museum. It was cast at the Lit Art workshop in Zhukovsky. The front of the shield depicts key figures of Russian history and culture: Prince Yury Danilovich, Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, Nicholas I, Metropolitan Philaret, Tchaikovsky, Mendeleev and the artist Viktor Vasnetsov. Next to them are composite figures of a Soviet-era party official, a Red Army soldier of the Great Patriotic War and a modern person representing today's residents of Klin.
