Susanin has put together a route through the locations where iconic scenes of the series “The Boy's Word: Blood on the Asphalt” were filmed. According to a popular story, Yaroslavl played 1980s Kazan because the authorities of Tatarstan objected to the series shining a light on the grim history of street gangs. The filmmakers were helped by standard Soviet housing, swapped address plates, and other tricks. So, ready to motatsya*? _*Motatsya_ is 1980s slang meaning to roam around with your crew.

Background

The boys walked through the yards of the barracks on Suzdalskoye Highway to their first viewing on an exotic “vidak” (VCR). Local residents still dry their laundry on clotheslines outdoors, just like in the good old days. The wooden houses here have stood since 1926; residents are gradually being resettled and the houses torn down.

Why Did People Pay to Watch the “Vidak”?

In the early 1980s a VCR was usually a foreign-made machine and almost impossible to buy. The Soviet-made Elektronika VM-12, released in 1984, cost 1,200 rubles, while a typical Soviet citizen's salary at the time was 120 rubles. That's why a screening of “RoboCop” on the Universam gang's small TV drew a full house.
