According to a popular story, Yaroslavl played 1980s Kazan because the authorities of Tatarstan objected to the series shining a light on the grim history of street gangs. The filmmakers were helped by standard Soviet housing, swapped address plates, and other tricks. So, ready to motatsya*? _*Motatsya_ is 1980s slang meaning to roam around with your crew.

Background

Palto, Marat, and Turbo take Vova “Adidas” off the operating table to save him from the Khadi Taktash gang. To do it they had to steal an ambulance. Amazingly, the mustached “Adidas” even survived. The chase scene was filmed on the Volga Embankment, and in the series you can see the Volga Bridge and the Volga itself.

The Volga Bridge

The bridge opened in 1913 in honor of the 300th anniversary of the House of Romanov. Before the Volga railway bridge was built, freight on the Moscow–Arkhangelsk route was hauled across the river on barges and sledges.
