Until the 1920s, the site of today's avenue was occupied by Dvoryanskaya (Nobility) Street, one of the best-appointed streets in the city. The City Duma building stood here, and before the war a branch of the Azov-Don Bank opened.
In the 1920s work began on a general development plan for Grozny, the old streets were renamed, and the main street was named after Lenin. In the 1970s it was lined with brand-new prefabricated apartment blocks and renamed Lenin Avenue. In 2004, after Akhmat-Khadzhi Kadyrov, the First President of the Chechen Republic and Hero of Russia, was tragically killed in a terrorist attack, the avenue was renamed in his honor.
Akhmat Kadyrov Avenue flows smoothly into Vladimir Putin Avenue. It was one of the first streets to be rebuilt after the two Chechen wars.
