Overview

In the block next to the Church of the Archangel Michael stands the Akhmat Kadyrov Chechen State University, one of the oldest in the republic. Its graduates include many Chechen writers, poets, and political figures, among them Kanta Ibragimov, Sheikhi Arsanukaev, and Aishat Kadyrova. Students from all over the world study here, and a small cottage village has been built in Grozny for them.

Historical Background

In 1938 a Teachers' Institute opened in Grozny; the same year it became a Pedagogical Institute, and in 1971 the Chechen-Ingush State University. In the early 1990s it admitted applicants to 11 faculties. Despite heavy destruction in 1995–1996, the university kept working.
