🔷 Mosaic

How It Came to Be

Decorating the facades of Nizhny Novgorod buildings with mosaics was widespread in the city in the 1960s and 1970s. That was when the mosaic “20 Years of Victory” appeared on the end wall of the building at 15 Zalomova Street, marking the anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War in 1965.

Its Design

The artists were Kim Shikhov and Dmitry Arsenin. The mosaic is made of ceramic tiles, colored cement, and white marble chips. The main part depicts the chief symbols of the Great Patriotic War. At the center of the composition is a Soviet soldier in a helmet, next to whom you can see a combat rocket. In the upper right corner is a St. George ribbon. The composition ends with the silhouette of an eternal flame, a symbol of remembrance of the war's victims.
