Historical Background

The embankment's history goes back to 1834, when Nicholas I visited Nizhny Novgorod. The emperor was very displeased with how the residents and officials treated the city. After that he personally drew up an 88-point plan for improving the city, including work on the lower city descents and embankments. Despite its long history, the embankment only took its final shape in our time. The latest reconstruction was completed in 2021 as part of the preparations for Nizhny Novgorod's 800th anniversary.

Where the Name Comes From

The embankment is named after Nikolai Mikhailovich Fedorovsky, a mineralogist and founder of applied mineralogy. Fedorovsky laid the foundations of the USSR State Cadastre of Mineral Deposits and wrote textbooks and many books on mineralogy.

Beautiful Views

Fedorovsky Embankment is made up of a great many terraces with areas for relaxing and strolling. They offer the most beautiful views of the lower part of the city: the Fair, the Strelka (where the Oka and Volga meet), and Rozhdestvenskaya Street. This is one of the best places to watch Nizhny Novgorod's famous sunsets. The embankment also has two pedestrian bridges and a monument to Maxim Gorky.
