“Sunset Capital” is one of the city's main brands. The route starts on Gorky Square, and most of it runs along Fedorovsky Embankment, with a wonderful view of the confluence of the Oka and the Volga. See a ten-meter (33-foot) mosaic, visit an exquisite early-20th-century mansion and Russia's only monument to Jules Verne, and many more amazing places.

A Grim Place

Internationalists Square appeared quite recently, in 2021. Before that it was just a thicket of trees and shrubs, but the place itself is truly historic. The Gendarme Ravine, now half filled in, is considered one of the city's mystical places. During the Red Terror of 1918–1922, the Gendarme Ravine was one of the sites in Nizhny Novgorod where hostages were executed and buried. The exact number of those buried is unknown. In the 1960s the ravine was filled with earth, and Maslyakova Street was laid along part of it. On the surviving section of the ravine, at the intersection of Malaya Pokrovskaya and Maslyakova Streets, is a garden square where a wooden memorial cross with a plaque was erected in 1990.

The Site and Its Monuments

Three monuments stand in the square: the Great Worship Cross, for the salvation of Russia and repentance for the murder of Nicholas II and his family; the Red Terror Cross; and the monument to the internationalist soldiers, founded in the 1990s.
