The First Sculpture in Russia

In 2015, the Year of Literature, a monument to the famous French writer Jules Verne was unveiled in Nizhny Novgorod. The renowned classic of adventure literature never visited the city, but he mentioned it in his works. The Nizhny Novgorod monument to Jules Verne is the first in Russia and the seventh in the world.

Jules Verne and the City

According to Nizhny Novgorod's chief architect Viktor Bykov, the location of the monument was no accident. In his novel “Michael Strogoff,” Jules Verne described Russia, and Nizhny Novgorod in particular. The hero of the book gets to know Rozhdestvenskaya Street and crosses the pontoon bridge to the Nizhny Novgorod Fair. And Fedorovsky Embankment offers a wonderful panoramic view of the very sights described in the novel.

Its Design

Jules Verne is shown flying in a hot-air balloon, holding a spyglass at the ready. The figure of the writer is life-size. The sculpture is made of plastic imitating bronze. The total height of the composition is about 10 meters (33 feet).
