“Sunset Capital” is one of the city's main brands. The route starts on Gorky Square, and most of it runs along Fedorovsky Embankment, with a wonderful view of the confluence of the Oka and the Volga. See a ten-meter (33-foot) mosaic, visit an exquisite early-20th-century mansion and Russia's only monument to Jules Verne, and many more amazing places.

History

Gorky (as the city was then called) had many defense plants and research institutes. The authorities sought to protect military secrets, so in 1959 the city was closed to foreigners. In the early 1990s that status was lifted. For the 20th anniversary of the city's opening and the arrival of foreign citizens, a monument and memorial stone, “Friendship Alley,” were installed on Fedorovsky Embankment.

The Opening

The grand opening took place on September 11, 2011. The mayors of 11 sister cities of Nizhny Novgorod took part in laying out Friendship Alley. Planting trees stands for strengthening ties and constant growth and development, just like sister-city relationships. The participants in the opening planted 27 saplings of willow, apple, and maple. The landscaped area with the young trees displays the flags of the 11 sister cities.
