Its Architecture

The Church of the Nativity, or Stroganov Church, is one of Nizhny Novgorod's most striking architectural landmarks and a fine example of Russian Baroque. It was built in 1696–1719 with funds from the merchant Grigory Stroganov. The church stands on Rozhdestvenskaya Street, once the city's main trading artery. The building is made of white stone and adorned with numerous decorative elements: columns, pilasters, window surrounds, cornices, and other details. Inside, a rich iconostasis and frescoes have survived.

Legends and Myths

Grigory Stroganov wanted to build a church unlike any other in Rus. He found a Russian master who created a magnificent building. Then Stroganov asked him whether he could build an even more beautiful church. “Why not? I can,” the master replied. So Stroganov ordered his servants to put out the master's eyes. But the master broke free, ran up the bell tower, and threw himself down. Only he didn't hit the ground: he turned into a raven and flew away. And a black raven's wing appeared above the bell tower's dome in memory of the sorcerer-master.
