Romanov-Borisoglebsk changed its name to Tutaev only in 1918, in honor of a Red Army soldier killed during the Yaroslavl Uprising. The Volga divides the town into two unequal parts, with the right bank much larger. But that doesn't mean there's nothing to see on the left. Let's stroll past the main sights of the left bank.

Historical Background

The town's first stone church was built in 1658 with donations from parishioners. There was not enough money, and at the request of the local people Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich granted funds to complete the construction. The church was closed for worship in 1930 and reopened only in 1992. In 1960 it was designated a cultural heritage site.

Murals

The church is unique for its frescoes, an early example of the Northern Russian school of painting. They were created right after the church was built, with the participation of Guriy Nikitin. Among the frescoes are some very unusual ones: a seven-headed eagle with ten horns, and creatures with a ram's head and an eagle's body. The murals on the south wall are devoted to Gospel scenes. The most remarkable fresco is “The Flagellation of Christ”: in it the executioners are not Roman soldiers but Russian lads in peasant shirts.

Fun Fact

Nearby is the privately owned, restored estate of the Zatsepin noble family, where the TV series “Chaliapin” was filmed.
