Historical Background

This monument honors Metropolitan Pitirim of Volokolamsk and Yuriev (1926–2003). During the crisis years of perestroika and the 1990s, the Metropolitan headed the publishing work of the whole Church. He was also actively involved in Volokolamsk's cultural life, and in 1989 he was even elected a People's Deputy of the USSR.

About the Sculpture

The monument is very new. It was made in 2021 to a design by Yuri Khmelevsky, Honored Artist of Russia.

The Metropolitan's Work

Pitirim became the first abbot of the reopened Joseph-Volokolamsk Monastery, which had been shut down back in 1922 on the orders of the Bolshevik Party. The Metropolitan personally campaigned for the monastery to be revived. He commanded respect and did a great deal to strengthen and spread the word of God through publishing and educational work. Metropolitan Pitirim was also involved in international and public affairs, and he accompanied Mikhail Gorbachev on some of his trips abroad.
