Long before the current stone church appeared here in 1776, this was already a holy site. Wooden churches replaced one another as fires destroyed them. In 1901 a bell tower was added to the church. It survives only in photographs.
A Volokolamsk resident from the early 20th century would hardly recognize this building as the Church of the Nativity. It was badly damaged in the 1930s: the upper tiers of the bell tower were destroyed and the dome was taken down. World War II didn't spare the heritage either. After the war the building housed administrative offices. Today the Church of the Nativity is active again, and its facade is being restored.
