Historical Background

The Oldest Church in Volokolamsk If you had tried to storm the Volokolamsk kremlin in the 15th century, you'd have had a hard time. It's no easy task today either. The Resurrection Cathedral stands on the former fortress rampart (a defensive wall) built to protect against the frequent scourge of those years — raids of all kinds.

Architecture

- A single-domed church with a helmet-shaped dome; - Built of white stone; - A decorative band runs between the tiers of windows; - 19th-century murals survive, along with some from the 1480s.

More History

It was built, as they say, to last for centuries. The church went up in 1480, in the days of the Principality of Volok. Its main altar is dedicated to the Resurrection of Christ. It is the only building from that period in Volokolamsk to have survived. The church saw the last years of the Golden Horde and the Great Stand on the Ugra River, and it survived the siege by the Polish King Sigismund in 1613. But in 1930 the Resurrection Cathedral was closed, and a technical college and a warehouse moved in. From 1944 to 1947 it and the neighboring St. Nicholas Cathedral held a camp for German prisoners of war. After that the cathedral stood neglected for a long time. Services resumed only in 1993.
