Historical Background

The Youngest Cathedral of the Kremlin Complex Compared to the Resurrection Cathedral, St. Nicholas Cathedral is a “new build”. It went up in 1853–1862 and is believed to have been dedicated to the memory of those who died in the Crimean War (1853–1856). Architecturally it balances the Resurrection Cathedral: although their styles differ, the two cathedrals echo each other in their shapes and their single domes.

More History

Its troubles didn't end with the usual closure and destruction of the interior. The cathedral lost its dome during the battles for Moscow in 1941. From 1944 to 1947 it held a camp for German prisoners of war.

Becoming a Museum

The 1970s were a second youth for St. Nicholas Cathedral: the dome and interior were restored, and a museum opened here. Surprisingly, after the collapse of the Soviet Union the cathedral did not resume services. It still houses the Volokolamsk Museum of Local History. Local opinion is divided. Some aren't ready to accept a museum in a place “hallowed by prayer”. For tourists, though, it's a chance to get to know Volokolamsk's history up close.
