The Ryazan Kremlin is the best place to start getting to know Ryazan. On the “Kremlin route” you can see one of the largest Orthodox churches in Russia; find out where, legend has it, the great Prince Oleg of Ryazan hid his sword, which square in the city was called “Red,” and how the Diveevo convent is connected with the Ryazan Kremlin; take a photo at the city's most “iconic” selfie spot; and sip fragrant cardamom coffee like the one served on the biblical Via Dolorosa in the Old City of Jerusalem.

Kremlin Square Garden

Historical Background

Where the Kremlin square garden is today there was once Ilyinskaya Square, named after the Church of the Prophet Elijah on its eastern side. Until 1917 “Ilyinka” was the city's central and busiest square. Military parades, big fairs, holiday celebrations, and festivities were held here, and none of it was imaginable without the great crowds on everyone's beloved “Ilyinka.”

Ryazan's “Red” Square

After the revolution “Ilyinka” was renamed Sovetskaya (Soviet) Square. And thanks to the journalists of the newspaper Rabochy Klich (“Workers' Call”) of the day, it came to be unofficially called “Red Square” or “Revolution Square.” In the 1950s–60s a linden garden was laid out over most of it, and decades later it became a favorite strolling place for townspeople and was declared a landmark.

Ryazan's Triumphal Arch

The main entrance to the Kremlin park starts from Cathedral Square and is designed in a very ceremonial way, through propylaea with porticoes and columns. In 1895, for Ryazan's 800th anniversary, a Triumphal Arch with double-headed eagles and the Ryazan coat of arms was unveiled on this spot. In Soviet times the arch was replaced with the present propylaea.
