The Ryazan Kremlin is the best place to start getting to know Ryazan. On the “Kremlin route” you can see one of the largest Orthodox churches in Russia; find out where, legend has it, the great Prince Oleg of Ryazan hid his sword, which square in the city was called “Red,” and how the Diveevo convent is connected with the Ryazan Kremlin; take a photo at the city's most “iconic” selfie spot; and sip fragrant cardamom coffee like the one served on the biblical Via Dolorosa in the Old City of Jerusalem.

Historical Background

The monument to St. Sergius of Radonezh was erected in the Kremlin square garden in 2016. The statue appeared in Ryazan for good reason. In 1386 Sergius of Radonezh came on foot to Prince Oleg of Ryazan to persuade him to end the internecine strife and make peace with Grand Prince Dmitry Donskoy of Moscow. The enmity between the principalities was no joke: two close neighbors of the same faith were waging fierce war on each other. History does not record the words the saint addressed to Oleg, but they went straight to the prince's heart. Thanks to the saint's efforts, a truce was reached between the warring neighbors.

About the Sculpture

The monument was created with donations and was a gift to Ryazan from the Russian Military Historical Society.
