The Ryazan Kremlin is the best place to start getting to know Ryazan. On the “Kremlin route” you can see one of the largest Orthodox churches in Russia; find out where, legend has it, the great Prince Oleg of Ryazan hid his sword, which square in the city was called “Red,” and how the Diveevo convent is connected with the Ryazan Kremlin; take a photo at the city's most “iconic” selfie spot; and sip fragrant cardamom coffee like the one served on the biblical Via Dolorosa in the Old City of Jerusalem.

Historical Background

The earthen rampart and the moat in front of it were built in the 13th century to defend the town. Until the 17th century there were walls, towers, and other fortifications here. The ancient structure took on its present appearance in the first half of the 19th century. Today it is 340 meters (1,115 feet) long along its crest and almost 400 meters (1,310 feet) at its base, and it rises up to 18 meters (59 feet) above the moat.

The Legend of the Elder

During World War II the rampart by the Kremlin held one of the city's anti-aircraft defense posts with anti-aircraft guns. Old-time Ryazan residents still remember the legend of an elder who appeared on the rampart at night and blessed the city and the soldiers on duty at the guns. Many believed that the mysterious elder was none other than St. Vasily of Ryazan himself.

Dawn on the Rampart

Today the Kremlin rampart is where school graduates greet the dawn. And in winter the ancient defensive rampart is besieged by fans of sledding on tubes and sleds. The rampart offers a panoramic view of the Kremlin buildings and the old part of the city.
