The Ryazan Kremlin is the best place to start getting to know Ryazan. On the “Kremlin route” you can see one of the largest Orthodox churches in Russia; find out where, legend has it, the great Prince Oleg of Ryazan hid his sword, which square in the city was called “Red,” and how the Diveevo convent is connected with the Ryazan Kremlin; take a photo at the city's most “iconic” selfie spot; and sip fragrant cardamom coffee like the one served on the biblical Via Dolorosa in the Old City of Jerusalem.

The Last Remnant of a Monastery

The Kremlin's northernmost landmark is the Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit, or the Dukhovskaya Church. The small church is crowned with two tent roofs and two-tiered kokoshniks, so that the tent roofs seem to grow out of the kokoshniks. The church is the only surviving building of the Holy Spirit Monastery for men.

A Twin-Tent Church

For a long time the church was made of wood. It was rebuilt in stone in 1642 by the talented architect Vasily Zubov. Zubov's creation was badly damaged in one of the fires and was repaired only at the end of the 18th century with funds from Princess Dolgorukova. The church gained its three-tiered tent-roofed bell tower in the mid-19th century. At the same time a small chapel was put up next to it in memory of the lost fortifications of Pereyaslavl-Ryazansky.

The Church Today

In 1929 the church was closed, and a club for water transport workers opened inside. Today it houses the library of the Ryazan Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve.
