The Ryazan Kremlin is the best place to start getting to know Ryazan. On the “Kremlin route” you can see one of the largest Orthodox churches in Russia; find out where, legend has it, the great Prince Oleg of Ryazan hid his sword, which square in the city was called “Red,” and how the Diveevo convent is connected with the Ryazan Kremlin; take a photo at the city's most “iconic” selfie spot; and sip fragrant cardamom coffee like the one served on the biblical Via Dolorosa in the Old City of Jerusalem.

Historical Background

In 1677 construction of a new cathedral began on the site of the Kremlin's demolished powder house. In the final stage of construction, because of the engineers' miscalculations, the church suddenly collapsed. The new tender for the construction was won by the serf architect Yakov Bukhvostov. In 7 years of work Bukhvostov managed to create a majestic cathedral that, centuries later, still adorns not only Ryazan but all of Russia.

A Unique Iconostasis

The three-tiered church is built in the Naryshkin Baroque style. In 1702 it was consecrated by Metropolitan Stefan (Yavorsky). Under him a seven-tiered wooden iconostasis 27 meters (89 feet) high was installed inside. It is still one of the tallest iconostases in Russia. When the cathedral was closed in 1929 and its murals were hidden under whitewash, only the iconostasis was left untouched. Even the most zealous atheists couldn't bring themselves to destroy such a masterpiece.

The Dormition Cathedral in Numbers

With its gigantic size the Dormition Cathedral surpassed almost all buildings of its time. Its area is 1,600 square meters (17,200 square feet), its total height 72 meters (236 feet), its width with the galleries 41 meters (135 feet), its length 56 meters (184 feet), and its walls are almost 2.4 meters (8 feet) thick.

A Summer Church

From the 19th century the Dormition Cathedral served as the summer cathedral of the bishops of Ryazan. The cathedral still has no heating, so it is open only in the warm season.
