History of the Square

Vologda's 1781 master plan shows three squares on the site of the Old Market: Afanasyevskaya (today's Revival Square), Spasskaya and Sennaya (Hay Square). They were named after the churches that stood on them. In 1918 the squares were merged into one, Revolution Square. In 1924 the churches were closed, and later St. Athanasius Church (1924) and St. Nicholas Church (1928) were demolished.
