Attempts to Publish
At 19a Lermontova Street, once home to the Gudkov-Belyakov printing house, Sergei Yesenin tried to publish his anti-war poem “The Jackdaws”. The poem, probably written in 1914, could not find a publisher for a long time. In March 1915 the poet sent the manuscript to V. S. Mirolyubov in Petrograd for the Monthly Journal, but it was turned down. A year later, in July 1916, Yesenin negotiated its publication here in Vologda, but what happened to the poem afterwards, and where it is now, remains unknown.
