History of the Square
Before it became Kremlin Square, Vologda's main square was called Cathedral Square. It lies next to the Bishop's Court (the Vologda Kremlin and Cathedral Hill). Originally paved with wood, in 1947, for the city's 800th anniversary, it got a stone pavement, new boulevards and a green lawn in the middle. Ten years later, in 1957, the historic stone was covered with asphalt. Car traffic here stopped in the 1970s, and the area finally became a pedestrian zone in 2007, after a major reconstruction.
