Historical Background
The stone Church of the Holy Myrrh-Bearing Women was founded in 1767 on the site of a wooden church. The Myrrh-Bearing Women were followers of Christ who were the first to come to the burial cave where, the day before, the Savior's body had been laid after being taken down from the cross. The women came to anoint the body with special aromatic mixtures, according to the Jewish burial rite. In the stereoscope you can see this lost building. The fourth photograph was taken from the roof of the Church of the Ascension, where Sovetskaya Street crosses Tverskoy Prospekt. At the center of the photo is the Church of the Myrrh-Bearing Women.
