Description

Before the revolution, the buildings at the corner of Tryokhsvyatskaya Street and Mironositsky Boulevard (now Radishchev Boulevard) were described as follows: “A residential house, stone, of 2 stories. A wing, stone, one-story. A shop, stone. A janitor's lodge, a shed, and a shed with a cellar, all stone.” The main house bore the sign “Photography.” In 1966 a five-story brick apartment building was put up on this site.

Historical Background

Permission to open a photo studio was granted in 1894 to the Tver photographers N. A. Alexandrov and D. I. Orlov. Dmitry Ivanovich Orlov was a peasant from Kostroma Governorate, and Nikolai Alexandrovich Alexandrov was a Tver merchant who owned a lithography shop. They were very different people united by work they loved. The building bore the sign “Photography,” the general word used in the early 20th century for photo studios and workshops. The process of being photographed would also seem strange to people today. Clients waited patiently while their faces were carefully covered with a thick layer of white powder, and then they had to sit motionless in front of the camera for about half an hour.
