Description

On Stepan Razin Embankment you begin to understand why Tver is sometimes compared to St. Petersburg. First, the houses along the street stand wall to wall, a style also used in St. Petersburg. Second, two bridges can be seen from here at once, the New Volga and the Old Volga, which also recalls the city on the Neva. The embankment also offers a beautiful panorama of the mouth of the Tvertsa River, the Dormition Cathedral, and the Holy Catherine Convent.

Architecture

One of the city's chief adornments, the “single facade,” is the fruit of the genius of the architect Pyotr Nikitin. It was according to his master plan that Tver was rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1763. Empress Catherine the Great appraised the efforts of this outstanding architect thus: “Tver is the most beautiful city after Petersburg.” And the empress knew a thing or two about architecture.

Why 9?

Each building has 9 window bays: this was how Pyotr Nikitin immortalized the memory of Empress Catherine II (the number of letters in the empress's name in Russian, Ekaterina).

Myths and Legends

On May 2, 1767, the flotilla carrying the empress set off down the Volga toward Simbirsk. Along the new houses on the right bank, icons of saints were placed in every window, so that misfortune would pass the empress by on her journey, and candles were burning.
