Historical Background

The House of the Voroshilov Marksmen, also known as the House of Red Commanders, was built by the military department in 1935 to a design by the architect Viktor Anferov as a residential building for military specialists and officers. Before the war it housed the headquarters of the Kalinin Military District. In 1940–1941 the building hosted the Higher Military Pedagogical Institute. During the war it was occupied first by a headquarters and then by a hospital. After the war, from 1946 until the early 1950s, the building belonged to the Molotov Academy of Logistics and Supply, and it was then handed over to the Academy of Chemical Defense.

Architecture

The building is in the prewar Neoclassical style. Seen in plan, it forms a right triangle whose sides are Tverskoy Prospekt, Stepan Razin Embankment, and Volnogo Novgoroda (Free Novgorod) Street.
