Historical Background
Tver “owes” its famous historic architecture to the fire of 1763. To rebuild the burned city, Empress Catherine II sent a team of architects to Tver, which at various times included Pyotr Nikitin, Carlo Rossi, and others. The jewel of the town plan was the “Versailles trident”: three rays of streets radiating from a single point, just as in St. Petersburg, Versailles, and Rome.
