The Owner of the Mansion
From 1941 to 1943 D. N. Kardovsky and his wife lived here. Who was he? Kardovsky was a master draftsman, a pupil of the great Ilya Repin, and a former owner of this house. Dmitry Nikolaevich's illustrations adorned books by Leo Tolstoy, Ivan Turgenev, Ivan Krylov, and Leonid Leonov. For many years Kardovsky worked at the Maly Theater, designing costumes and sets for plays by Alexander Ostrovsky and Ivan Turgenev.
