Historical Background

This is a centuries-long story of the strength of faith and the perseverance of its followers. The monastery was founded in 1348. The site chosen for it was a swampy patch of land among bushes and reeds. Nevertheless, it immediately became famous and attracted many believers.

Trials of Time

In the 14th century Khan Tokhtamysh sent his army north, and Pereslavl was destroyed along with other towns. Historians write that the only ones who escaped were those who rowed out to the middle of Lake Pleshcheyevo in boats or on whatever they could find. Twenty-five years later Emir Edigu burned Pereslavl again, and all its monasteries with it. The next restoration came under Vasily III. All in all, the monastery was burned and plundered more than once, was first a monastery for men and then a convent, suffered cruelly in the Soviet period, surviving an explosion and destruction, and gained two hieromartyrs.

Today

The convent has been rebuilt and restored and is active again. Its chief relic, the Korsun Cross containing holy relics, has also been returned.
