Historical Background

Beyond the town rampart, on Proezdnaya Street, stands yet another church: the Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh, which served the town prison. It was built in 1911. Despite its dilapidated state, you can still tell it was once a church. The red-brick building is in the Russian Revival style outside and Art Nouveau inside. The money for its construction was donated by the factory owner S. Pavlov. In Soviet times the church was closed and partly dismantled, and its interior was looted. Later the building was remodeled and handed over to Sberbank. Today a sign on the door of the former church reads “Utility Payments Cashier.”
