Description
The City Garden suffered badly during the war. Destroyed were the Kukushka (Cuckoo) café-restaurant, where Yesenin once had dinner, most of the park sculptures, and a monument to Stalin. During the occupation there were gallows in the garden. As they retreated, the Germans poured water over the steep southern bank of the Volga so that it would quickly be covered with a thick crust of ice, making it harder for the Soviet soldiers storming it to attack. Still, some things have survived to this day: a fountain built in 1904 and a few century-old lindens and elms.
