Historical Background

Work on the obelisk began in 1966 on the left bank of the Tmaka River, in memory of the fact that here, just a few hours' drive from the capital of the USSR, the enemy was stopped. The obelisk was solemnly unveiled on December 16, 1970.

Fun Facts

A church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, blown up in the late 1960s, once stood on its site.

About the Design

The obelisk was designed in the workshop of the Moscow Art Fund with the participation of the architects T. E. Saevich and N. N. Milovidov, the engineers M. S. Shumilov and B. S. Kadik, and the sculptors A. N. Filippov and I. M. Rukavishnikov.

The Structure

The monument is 45.5 meters (149 feet) high. At its base, the column of thin-walled reinforced concrete blocks is decorated with eight copper bas-reliefs measuring 4 by 6 meters (13 by 20 feet), dedicated to the deeds of fearless heroes. Each bears a text and images of war heroes and home-front workers. The structure is floodlit, and its torch is lit only a few times a year.
