Historical Background
From 1935 the building at 14 Sovetskaya Street was the Red Army House. During the occupation the Germans set up an officers' club and casino here, where they planned to celebrate the coming year 1942. But on December 16, 1941, it was on this very building that Major General Vitaly Sergeyevich Polenov, commander of the 243rd Rifle Division, raised the Red Banner as a sign that Kalinin had been liberated from the Nazi invaders. According to some historians, the occupiers restored the city's historical name, “Tver.” A propaganda newspaper, Tverskoy Vestnik (The Tver Herald), was published in the city. Later the Red Army House became the House of Officers, which housed the headquarters of the 31st Army of the Kalinin Front.
