Description

The memorial plaque is mounted on one of the buildings of the Military Academy of Aerospace Defense at 44 Zhigarev Street. The street is named after the Soviet military commander Pavel Fyodorovich Zhigarev, Chief Marshal of Aviation, who headed the academy from November 1959 to October 1963.

Biography

Pavel Fyodorovich was born on November 14, 1900, into a poor family in the village of Brikovo, Tver Governorate. In 1922 he graduated from the Tver Cavalry School. Pavel Fyodorovich made a major contribution to the defeat of the Nazi German forces near Moscow. He personally directed the air units that defended the city. For the defense of the capital, P. F. Zhigarev was awarded the Order of Lenin and received the rank of Colonel General of Aviation.
