Historical Background

In October 1941 the building at 1 Sovetskaya Street (now Gymnasium No. 6) housed School No. 7, and during the occupation, a German military hospital. Working there was an elderly doctor with an ordinary Russian surname: Petrov. In fact, this man was an intelligence agent, and he greatly helped the command in drawing up the plan to liberate Kalinin.

Fun Fact

Nikolai Yakovlevich Petrov was a remarkable man. Despite his family's difficult financial situation, he managed to prepare for the gymnasium entrance exams on his own and learned five languages. When the Germans entered the city, the intelligence department formed a group: Dr. Petrov and two young women, Anya Belozerova and Nina Kazakova. They were to make their way into occupied Kalinin. Each was given a cover story. None of the Germans suspected that this cultured, experienced doctor could be a Soviet underground agent. In 1942 Nikolai Petrov was parachuted to the partisans near the town of Nevel to continue the fight against fascism. He was 71 years old at the time. Nikolai Yakovlevich was awarded the Order of the Red Banner, and in 1951, by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet, the Order of Lenin.
