Historical Background

During the German occupation, Kalinin had several German burial grounds, including ones opposite the Travel Palace and on Lenin Square. In keeping with Prussian military tradition, fallen soldiers and officers were buried in the city center.

A Swastika Instead of Lenin

In place of the Lenin monument on the square, the invaders put up a huge swastika, meant to intimidate the population. One night some young Komsomol members pulled the Nazi symbol down with ropes, and the next morning one of them paid for it with his life: he was hanged on the fence next to the pedestal. After the city's liberation all these graves were destroyed and the remains reburied. Today there is a mass grave of soldiers who died liberating Kalinin.

The Fate of the Lenin Monument

The first monument to V. I. Lenin was erected on the square in 1926. Its author was Sergei Dmitrievich Merkurov. In 1941 the Germans destroyed it by firing at it with an anti-tank gun. Local residents kept the fragments of the monument and, after the city was liberated on December 16, handed them over to the sculptor. Sadly, he died before he could finish restoring it. Nevertheless, in 1959 a new monument appeared on Lenin Square, created by Merkurov's students, the sculptors P. V. Barkov and V. P. Koenig. Fragments of Merkurov's first monument are still kept in the Lenin Museum at Gorki near Moscow.
