The Syzran Bend

The Syzranka River (once called the Syza and the Syzran) gave the town its name. Translated from Turkic, it means “the river flowing out of a ravine; the ravine river.” Syzran was founded where the Syzranka flows into the Volga. Within the town the river winds, forming a beautiful arc called the Syzran Bend (Syzranskaya Luka).

Historical Background

The Syzranka divides the town into parts. The bank opposite the Syzran Kremlin is popularly called Zasyzran (“beyond the Syzran”). Its historical name is the Preobrazhenskaya Sloboda, after the church that once stood here.

Local Features

At first the Preobrazhenskaya Sloboda grew mainly cucumbers and cabbage, and later carrots and tomatoes. The traditional Syzran tomato is pink, with sugary flesh and large fruit. According to some accounts, the variety was first brought from Astrakhan. Attempts to grow it in other regions never gave the same result. So it is possible that the flavor of Syzran tomatoes owes something to the local soil and water. Since 2001 the town has held a regional festival devoted to the tomato grown in Syzran, called the Syzran Tomato. It takes place on a weekend in mid-August.
