Panorama of the Zakrymza Side

The whole area beyond the Krymza used to be called the Zakrymza side. Its dominant feature is the Syzran Holy Ascension Monastery, founded in May 1685 at the petition of the elder Kirill for retired soldiers of the Syzran garrison. It was the elder Kirill and Sergeant Lyubimov, who petitioned Tsars Ivan and Peter Alekseyevich “to permit them to build in the town a monastery for men in the Name of the Ascension of the Lord…,” who went down in Syzran's history as the first of its residents mentioned in the sources.

The Zakrymza Side Was Divided into Two Large Slobodas: Ilyinskaya and Pokrovskaya

They were named after the churches that stood there. The Intercession (Pokrovsky) Church did not survive the years of persecution. But the Elijah (Ilyinsky) Church held its ground. We will get to know it more closely later on.
